Mainland to send back crime suspect who fled Taiwan
A man who allegedly fled to the mainland after carrying out a violent crime in Taiwan will be sent back to the island, a Beijing official said on Tuesday.
Xinhua News Agency reported that the man had confessed to police in Xiamen that he had shot a man in New Taipei City.
The suspect flew to the mainland on November 22 after the shooting, media in Taiwan said.
Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the suspect would be repatriated to Taiwan as part of ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and maintain the order of cross-strait exchanges.
Hong Kong man Chan Tong-kai has been wanted by police in Taiwan since he allegedly killed his girlfriend during a trip to Taipei in 2018.
He was never sent back to the island to face justice, despite allegedly confessing to the crime.
